MERICS European China Talent Program

The European China Talent Program (ECTP) encourages young European professionals to expand their understanding of contemporary China and the ways it affects Europe. Launched by the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) in 2015, the ECTP takes place each year and gathers a select group of 15 young European professionals with a track record of exposure to China and ambitions to develop their career working on or researching China.

Throughout the years, the ECTP has become Europe's key forum for young professionals with a strong China background. Its alumni network spans national governments, EU institutions, international organizations, academia, business, think tanks and public affairs. To ensure diverse representation and a multitude of European viewpoints, the ECTP welcomes applications not only from EU citizens, but also from those of EU accession countries, EFTA countries and from the UK.

The 2023 ECTP took place from September 12-15 at MERICS in Berlin. ECTP participants had an opportunity to learn from and exchange with peers and experts from various China-related career paths. They also worked in teams to formulate and present concrete proposals for improving European policy towards China on some of the most pressing issues of the day. Additionally, the participants gained insights into the work of MERICS, the largest European research institute on contemporary China. Successful applicants received a travel allowance, board and lodging for the duration of the workshop.

As China expands its international presence and becomes increasingly active in global governance, European expertise on contemporary China is needed more than ever. The ECTP will continue to play its role as a platform for young Europeans to tackle critical issues in European China policy and discuss how Europe can make the most of opportunities and overcome challenges in its relationship with China in the years ahead.

The ECTP 2024 took place in Berlin, September 17-20.
